to signal whenever you are making any kind of lateral manouver or full turn. You had to do this to pass your driver's test. It's not an option. If you think it is, you are wrong. BZZZZZT.
However, as a 30 year seasoned biker, I don't trust FOR A MINUTE what the driver is going to do based on their signal or lack of it. I watch the car, the driver's awareness based on their head movements, the attitude of the car (slow, fast, straight or weaving) and the front wheel orientation, if possible.
The worst are those who signal and then do not follow through, be it a lane change, or the best, a left-hand turn. Had a buddy seriously smacked up from assuming the left-turn signal on a vehicle meant the vehicle was indeed going to turn left. They instead went straight... into him, with the signal on. He went straight... to the hospital.
